Tech Rage IT CEO Matt Rose Discusses Calls to Slow AI Development on FOX 35 Orlando

Rose, CEO and co-founder of Tech Rage IT, joined Garrett Wymer on FOX 35
Orlando's FOX Orlando Live to discuss growing calls for a more measured pace of
artificial intelligence development.
The conversation followed the release of Pacing the Frontier, a statement
signed by more than 1,300 employees of leading AI companies. The signatories
asked the federal government to support an international effort to develop
tools that could slow automated AI development if its capabilities begin
advancing faster than society's ability to understand or control them.
Rose explained that the more immediate concern is not
necessarily that AI systems are independently deciding to act maliciously.
Instead, increasingly powerful systems may be given broad instructions without
clearly defined limits.
"I don't think it's so much that agents are really going
rogue," Rose said. "AI wants to help the human and complete the task it is
given. If the human just puts in a prompt that says, 'Do this for me,' and
doesn't understand that they may also need to say, 'But don't do this,' AI just
wants to make them happy. People using AI have to put it in a box of what they
expect it to do, or else it is going to go outside of the box, especially if
they don't give it one."
Rose said slowing development would not mean eliminating
the AI tools already available or reversing the progress that has been made. It
could provide additional time to strengthen security, testing and oversight
before even more capable systems are released.
"The development of this is incredibly fast, and what's
already out there is already out there," Rose said. "I don't think a slowdown
would be the end of the world. It might give everybody a chance to take a step
back and make sure that we're putting the right controls in place."
The interview also addressed the potential consequences
of slowing development in the United States while other countries continue
advancing their own AI capabilities. Rose acknowledged that global competition
presents a legitimate concern but said it should not justify moving forward
without evaluating the risks.
"There is definitely a risk of falling behind, but there
is also a downside to running into AI headfirst without thinking about what
we're doing," Rose said. "It's a risk, but I wouldn't say it's an easy answer
of, 'Because of that, let's just go all in.'"
Rose also discussed AI's possible effect on employment.
He has consistently encouraged businesses and employees to learn how to use AI,
but noted that companies must decide whether they will use the technology to
strengthen their workforce or simply reduce it.
